Why a Sweathouse
Our vision is for Indigenous people to live in abundance. Abundance requires more than surviving it requires spaces where healing, responsibility, and cultural continuity can live and be practiced.
The Sweathouse is a sacred, land-based space that supports community wellbeing, restoration, and connection across generations. This project is rooted in respect, cultural values, and relationship to place.

'Er'gerrk (Yurok) Sheshlh-'i~ (Tolowa)
Within Yurok and Tolowa traditions, the sweathouse is honored as a sacred space of knowledge, discipline, reflection, and cultural responsibility.
In the Tolowa creation story, all existence begins in the sweathouse of knowledge, a sacred place of wisdom, teaching, and becoming. It is a space where boys learn responsibility, relationship, and what it means to grow into manhood within community.
The Sweathouse Initiative honors this understanding by restoring ceremonial and educational spaces that support regulation, accountability, leadership, and cultural continuity for future generations.
This work is rooted in relationship to culture, place, and the teachings that were meant to endure.
Photo Description:
This image shows a demonstration sweathouse used for educational and cultural learning purposes. It is shared as a representation of the type of ceremonial and teaching space the Sweathouse Initiative seeks to restore and build through Indigenous Rise. It is not the actual sweathouse site or structure being developed.
The image reflects the importance of the sweathouse as a place of knowledge, discipline, cultural continuity, and the transition of boys into manhood through relationship, responsibility, and community teachings.

The Sweathouse Project is being developed through Indigenous leadership and community accountability. We approach this work with care, humility, and responsibility to cultural protocols.
Specific teachings and ceremonial practices are held within community and are not publicly documented..
We are currently seeking resources to support the development and long-term care of the Sweathouse site. This includes project planning, site preparation, materials, and ongoing stewardship.
Support may include:
Assimilation and boarding school systems disrupted Indigenous relationships to land, culture, and collective healing. Restoring sacred spaces is part of rebuilding village norms, cultural values, and community trust.
This project strengthens the conditions for belonging, wellbeing, and abundance through relationship with each other and place.
We invite supporters and aligned partners to help build and sustain this sacred space with respect and care. Your support strengthens Indigenous-led healing and cultural continuity for generations to come.
Help us raise awareness of our mission and programs by sharing our website, social media pages, and events with your friends, family, and colleagues.
